A license key runs on one computer at a time. Moving it takes two steps: release it from the computer that has it, then paste the same key on the new one.
If that computer still runs Yardstick, do it there — open Settings → License and press Release this computer. It is immediate and needs nothing else. Use the form below when that machine is gone, broken, or you no longer have it.
Uninstalling or reinstalling Yardstick does not release the key. The license stays registered to the old installation, so a fresh install on the same computer looks like a different machine and will say the license is on another computer. That is expected, it is not a fault, and the form below is how you clear it. If you are about to wipe or reinstall, releasing it first from Settings → License saves you this trip.
Paste the key from your emailed receipt. It starts with
YSK1. We email a six digit code to the address the license was
issued to, so that nobody holding your key can take it off your computer
without you. The code usually arrives within a minute or two; check spam
before asking for another.
Open Yardstick on the computer you want to use and go to Settings → License. If the key is already on that machine, press Try again — there is nothing to paste. On a new machine, paste the key in and press Activate.
The release takes effect the moment you enter the code, so go straight back to Yardstick and press Try again. You do not need to wait for anything to catch up. Nothing is lost and nothing stops recording at any point.
A subscription covers your household, not the internet. Tying a key to a machine is what keeps the price where it is — and releasing it yourself means you never have to ask us to do it.
The code is why nobody else can. Your key on its own cannot move your license: whoever asks has to be reading the inbox that bought it.
Recording never stops, whatever the license says. If a key is registered elsewhere, this computer keeps recording your Yarbo and shows you the history again the moment the license is back in order.
